ASBJ Celebrates the 45th Anniversary of IDEA

In the February issue of the American School Board Journal, they commemorate the anniversary of a landmark education law: the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). When Congress passed the law, it promised to fund 40 percent of the additional costs of special education. That promise, as we know, has not been fulfilled.

AASA School Administrator Magazine Features Several Illinois School Administrators

School Administrator is AASA's (The Superintendent's Association) award-winning monthly magazine. It is delivered to every public school superintendent in the United States who is an AASA member and others at the cabinet-level. It provides big-picture perspectives and collegial advice on a broad range of topics specific to K-12 education and the leadership of public school districts.

In January, the magazine's focus is on special education and it features several Illinois school district administrators:

This article was written by Kurt Schneider and Suzanne Sands from NSSED about Board Leadership for inclusive and equitable practices.  It highlights the work of teams in Winnetka 36, Lake Forest 67, and Lake Forest 115 toward more inclusive practices.

Another article highlights the work being done with student-led IEP meetings.  While lots of school districts use this practice, the article highlights the work of NSSEO and IAASE Leader, Judy Hackett.

Next up, there is a great article on the use of online and virtual therapies.  Quoted in the article is IAASE President, Kevin Rubenstein.

You can view the whole magazine online by clicking here.  There is much more to check out, but congratulations to these educators for contributing to the knowledge of other educators across the country!
